UAE: Safety campaign for Dubai desert tour drivers begins

UAE

The Dubai Police have started a programme called "Tour Dubai Safely" to educate tour company drivers about traffic laws and general safety precautions when travelling off-road in the desert.

The Tourist Police Department, Lahbab Police Station, and Al Faqa'a Police Station organised the awareness campaign, which was directed at drivers of tour operators in the Al Aweer, Lahbab, and Margham districts.

The initiative, according to Brigadier Khalfan Al Jallaf, Director of the Tourist Police Department, is one of several initiatives targeted at drivers and motorists to increase traffic and road safety awareness that are carried out under the orders of Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police.

The need of preparing vehicles for obstacles and difficult circumstances they may encounter, monitoring and adjusting the tyre pressures, and carrying their off-road emergency supplies, which should contain a safety kit and requirements, were all stressed to drivers at "Tour Dubai Safely." In order to manoeuvre through the desert with ease, drivers were also advised to engage four-wheel drive and travel slowly.

According to Brig Al Jallaf, 1,500 drivers in the Lahbab area received 3,000 awareness pamphlets, as did 1,000 drivers in Al Aweer and 500 in Margham.
